Once the World Serious is over my soft spot for hard ball moves from spectator to participation in a computer simulated on-line baseball league. Seems more than àpropos and serene for my sixty years plus.
And once this election cycle is tallied I’m going to end my participation in call and response to quit social media. And reduce my private posting positions by two thirds, and offer, if anything, the occasional quick observation subject to neither like or comment, and on a one horse town, personal, if not private, blog.
Politics may not kill the current crop of social media branded platforms but a pushback upon reflection is sure to materialize as quick history sums how much damage was done to the whole of the body politic.
The magic of digital discourse can cast a spell on those susceptible to the mean-spiritedness of the times, and the pixie dust of bit and byte distance affords the excuse of claiming that text is just text, and protected, shaman like, regardless of good or evil, or simply ill-mannered.
To make amends for that subdivision of moralism, I contend that many a comment made on Facebook is directed not to the originator of the post but to the Facebook feed it runs through. Facebook being free, suggest to many that content comes without true authorship, (ownership) hence how can one hurt the feeds feelings?
And besides, to paraphrase the Republican Party nominee for President of the United States…Words people…it’s just words.
